Boys indoor soccer teams take home city medals

Congratulations to the Griesbach U9 and U11 boys teams. Both took home bronze medals at Edmonton Minor Soccer Association city finals on the weekend of Feb. 22-24.

We’d also like to thank all the coaches, volunteers and parents in all ages groups for supporting an excellent indoor 2018-19 soccer season.

Let’s keep this momentum going into the summer. Outdoor soccer registration is coming up on March 6 and 12 at MGG School.

Griesbach Explorers: A new outdoor program for preschoolers

We are excited to announce a NEW local sports/activity program for preschoolers.

With the success of the Griesbach Minis in the winter session, the community league will offer a new Griesbach Explorers program that will run from the start of May until the end of June. This program is open to children born in 2014 and 2015, to a maximum of 25 participants.

It will run every Wednesday, starting May 1 to June 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. It will take place outside, in and around the parks in Griesbach.

The program will consist of various activities which allow children to develop physical skills such as coordination, balance, exercise, hand-eye coordination, teamwork and fair play. Activities could include tag games, yoga, soccer, baseball, hiking and track and field. All the activities will be facilitated by mentor coaches from the Griesbach Explorers program.

The Griesbach Explorers program has a formal registration process that will take place on March 6 and March 12, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at MGG school, at the same time as soccer and baseball registration. The cost is $50 for the program. You must be a resident of Griesbach and hold a valid Griesbach Community League membership.

This is a parented program. Parents remain with the children and are encouraged to participate in the activities. All parents must be willing to volunteer during one of the sessions as an assistant.

There is one volunteer requirement per child, such as a bingo shift or volunteering at another community league event.

Follow these steps to register:

1. Download this form and fill out two copies to bring to the registration session.

2. Attend one of the registration dates at MGG School, on either March 6 or March 12. Email Joe: jsalaysay@hotmail.com, for late registration.

3. Purchase a valid community league membership. Available at the registration or online in advance.

4. Pay the registration fee: $50.00 (please bring cheque or cash).

5. Select a volunteer commitment and provide a $250.00 refundable cheque: to be returned once your volunteer commitment has been honoured.

6. If you wish to volunteer as a mentor for the complete season, that counts as your volunteer commitment.

Seeking a few great nominees for the Griesbach Community League board

Our Annual General Meeting is Monday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at MGG School.

This is your chance to know what is going on in the community and have your say on priorities for 2019-20.

The AGM is also the time we hold elections for new board members. The following positions are up for election:

  • President
  • Secretary
  • Neighbourhood Watch
  • Structures & Facilities
  • Sports
  • Programs
  • Fundraising
  • Membership

You must have a valid Griesbach Community League membership in order to run for a board position or vote in new members. Memberships will be on sale ahead of the meeting, or you can purchase one online at efcl.org.

From parties, to lobbying on important community issues, to kids’ sports programs, we couldn’t make any of this happen without volunteers. If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, don’t be shy. Read on to learn more.

What’s the time commitment for the board?

Your time is valuable and we keep this in mind. Board meetings are limited to one weekday evening per month. They usually take place at MGG School, from 7-9 p.m.
After the once-per-month meeting, additional time commitments vary depending on the projects and events related to your position.

Why should I run for a board position?

Meet new friends. The board works hard, but it finds lots of time for fun. The board members aim to foster a friendly, inclusive volunteer environment. You don’t need to know anyone on the board to join and there are social events just for members throughout the year.

Make the neighbourhood even better. You will have a hand in planning and executing the kind of events and programs you want to see in Griesbach.

Be in the know. You will be the first to know what is go- ing on in the neighbourhood. You will liaise with local developers, politicians and other stakeholders to have your say on new projects, priorities and developments.

Build your network. At least one of our board members launched a great new career this year through a connection made during GCL volunteer work. We can’t promise you a new or better job opportunity, but we can promise a chance to develop new skills and meet all kinds of people.

Please contact Brad: president@griesbachcommunity.com to get your name on the ballot ahead of the meeting. He would be happy to answer any more questions about what it is like to be a GCL board member. You can also read here for more detailed descriptions of board positions.

This is an open meeting. All members of the community are invited to attend and we hope you do come, even if you don’t want to run for a board position. We will be giving an update on events and accomplishments during the past year and outlining future priorities. There will be an opportunity to provide feedback.

Media release: GCL urges Competition Bureau to force Sobeys to sell or develop derelict lot

Griesbach Community League urges Competition Bureau to force Sobeys to sell or develop derelict lot

Feb. 4, 2019, Edmonton, AB – Residents of Griesbach are sick and tired of an undeveloped, derelict commercial lot on the southeast corner of the neighbourhood and are launching a Competition Bureau complaint campaign in order to pressure the lot owner, Sobeys Inc., to sell or develop.

The Griesbach Community League believes that Sobeys Inc. is in violation of at least two sections of the federal Competition Act.

Background

Sobeys purchased the highly visible and commercially valuable lot on the corner of 137th Avenue and 97th Street NW to build a grocery store. When Sobeys bought the Safeway chain in 2013, plans to develop this lot stopped. There is now no incentive for Sobeys to build a new store directly across from Safeway, the store it already owns in Northgate Centre. By holding this corner lot, Sobeys is ensuring that no other grocery competitor can build near its Safeway store.

When Sobeys agreed to be an anchor-tenant, they were permitted to place restrictive covenants on the commercial land adjacent to the property. These restrictions prevent businesses that would compete with a grocery store—including bakers, butchers and flower shops—from leasing available commercial space in Griesbach Square. Sobeys clearly has no interest in becoming an anchor tenant. These covenants restrict competition and should be removed.

Sobeys has failed to act on concerns raised by the Griesbach Community League in the past. As such, the Griesbach Community League is now launching this campaign, asking residents to complain to the Competition Bureau about Sobeys.

“Sobeys has intentionally prevented business development in the southeast corner of Griesbach for more than six years,” says Griesbach Community League president Brad Tilley. “Consumers in Griesbach and surrounding neigbourhoods have less choice because of Sobeys’ actions. It is time for the Competition Bureau to act.”

How much time does it take to be on the GCL board?

Your time is valuable! Board meetings are limited to one evening per month and last a maximum of two hours. They usually take place at MGG school, from 7-9 p.m.

After the once-per-month meeting, time commitment will vary depending on the projects and events related to your position. You can take on more, or less, work, as your schedule allows.
