March 2018

Griesbach Easter Egg Hunt 2018 is now sold out

We can now report that all the tickets for the annual Griesbach Easter Egg Hunt are gone. Anyone who didn’t hop to it will have to wait until next year.

The community league will welcome 200 little egg hunters, ages 12 and under, to Roundel Lake on the morning of Sunday, April 1.

We ask those who were lucky enough snag tickets to please arrive at the north side of Roundel Lake (that’s the far West lake in the community) by 10:20 a.m. to register. Bring your tickets and proof of community league membership. There will be coffee for the grown ups. Egg hunting starts at 10:30 a.m.

There will be NO TICKETS available at the event.

More details at the Eventbrite site.

Highlights from our AGM

Once again, Griesbach Community League had a strong turnout for our Annual General Meeting, which took place on March 15th. We were joined by several local merchants – including Core Dental, First Step Daycare and After School and Bone & Biscuit. Paramo Cafe graciously provided coffee and treats, which were absolutely delicious.

Meet your new board members

We are pleased to welcome several new members to the board of directors. It is fantastic to be able to attract new directors, as well as the enthusiasm and ideas they bring. Not to mention experience! Our board now boasts a Vice President who has served on City Council, and a former Digital Content Editor with Maclean’s magazine as our new Communications Director. Plus, two husband and wife teams. Our new directors will be great additions to an already strong and dedicated group. Our new directors are:

  • Vice President: Dave Loken
  • Treasurer: Aaron Gregson (incumbent)
  • Communications: Emily Senger
  • Structures and Facilities: Jim Chronopoulous (incumbent)
  • Memberships: Brett Kerley (incumbent)
  • Civics and Community Development: Michael Ching Jiunn Chen
  • Volunteers: Li Pan
  • Social: Tanya Schofield
  • Member at Large: Cheryl Flaigh
  • Parks and Gardens: Justin Laverty-Harrigan
  • Fundraising: Jeremey Schofield

Farewells…

At the same time, we are sad to say goodbye to several residents who left an indelible mark on our community. Carl Knowler (VP) was involved with the board from the time it was founded and was instrumental in bringing us to where we are today. Always affable and supportive, he was the driving force behind our community outreach efforts and could always be counted on to lend a hand and expertise wherever needed. (We are selfishly hoping he will stay involved in a non-elected capacity.)

The fabulous Bryan Evans helped transform and beautify Griesbach as our Parks and Gardens Director. He led efforts to plant perennials in the monument to General Griesbach and played a big role in helping the community gardens successfully transition to the new location at Central Park. He is stepping aside to focus on running a new K-9 school in southwest Edmonton as its principal.

Jen Horne served two terms as our Social Director and helped grow our events  to the next level – particularly the Shake at the Lake. Jenna Barker worked hard as our Civics and Community Development director. Thanks to Ginevra Mills for her work in fundraising.

Yours truly (Dave Neufeld) has stepped down as Communications Director after six years. It has been a very rewarding experience to work with this board from its founding days to help get the word out about the amazing things happening here. I’m going to miss it, but assure you I will still remain involved (you can check out any time you want, but you can never leave!) The torch has been passed to my incredibly talented successor, who will only build and improve on  our efforts to date.

Good luck to the new board!

Other news from the AGM

Marvin Newmann from Canada Lands provided an update – including an anouncement that Central Park is now the official name of the hill and parkland in the middle of our community. Kyle Braithwaite represented Brentwood Developments (the developer behind the commercial area). He explained they negotiating with several new tenants  and discussed efforts to work with the City and GCL to add new perimeter signage.

From our directors, we learned that final work is being done on the playground – and an event will be planned once construction is wrapped. Plans were shared regarding a proposal to retain the original playground using money left over from fundraising for the new playground. The old playground is still widely used due to the proximity to the soccer fields. Speaking of soccer, this year we expect to have 7 to 9 teams for the upcoming soccer season and 5 to 6 baseball teams. Details are still being worked out on the Spring Fling as well as a Community Cleanup. The Easter Egg Hunt is moving to Roundel Lake this year, and takes place on April 1.

We appreciate our MP, Kerry Diotte, for taking time out of his busy schedule to attend. A big thanks to Major General Griesbach School for hosting us. A big hand to local merchants who donated door prizes, including: Core Dental, Fairfield Inns and Suites, Shoppers Drug Mart, Paramo Cafe, Tim Hortons, Crown & Anchor Pub, Bone & Biscuit, First Step Daycare and Chatime,

What are the available positions on the GCL board and why you should run!
